Taksim Square, situated in the European part of Istanbul, is a major tourist and leisure district that is well known for its variety of restaurants, shops and hotels. Known as the centre of modern Istanbul, Taksim Square is the location of the Republic Monument, which was built in 1928 to commemorate the formation of the Turkish Republic.
