Captivating Cebu

Cebu, known as “Queen City of the South”, is the country’s oldest city. It is also the country’s second major city and considered a fast developing metropolis.

Discover Cebu's rich culture through historical sites such as Magellan’s Cross and Mactan Shrine, all within the vicinity of our hotel.

The Minor Basilica of the Holy Child, commonly known as Basilica del Santo Niño, is a 16th century basilica located in downtown Cebu. It is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country, purportedly built on the spot where the image of Santo Niño de Cebu is. This statue depicts the Holy Child Jesus which was found in 1565 by Spanish explorers led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Permanently encased in bulletproof glass, the statue bears a distinctive regalia that includes a gold crown, globus cruciger and sceptre.

Cebu is also a diver’s haven, as some of the country’s best dive sites are just a stones throw from the coast of Mactan island.

Your visit to Cebu would not be complete without island hopping. Mactan is home to some of the world’s finest beaches with turquoise waters and colourful coral reefs. Feast your eyes on amazing scenery, snorkel and glimpse the thriving sea life at the nearby marine sanctuaries, such as Hilutungan and Nalusu-an.

A low, flat island that lies five kilometers directly in front of Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu, Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the seven best-known spots in the world for migrating birds. It holds the largest concentration of migrating birds in the Philippines. Interested to get to Olango for some serious bird watching? You’re in luck, as there is an hourly ferry boat that leaves for the island from the pier, located right beside Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu.

There are only few places across the globe which offer opportunities for encounters with magnificent creatures of the oceans, such as the whale shark, locally known as “butanding”, which is the largest fish species in the world. A mere two-and-a-half hour drive from the hotel, and you can enjoy watching and swimming with the friendly creatures in the southern town of Oslob, Cebu.

Carbon and Tabuan Markets in downtown Cebu City are famous for local souvenirs and danggit, a Cebuano-style dried fish, and are better suited for the more adventurous traveler. Ayala Center Cebu and SM City Cebu are the two major malls in the city, each offering hundreds of shopping and dining options.

Cebu is famous for handmade guitars, and export-quality furniture and accessories. These can be purchased at a number of shops in Lapu-Lapu City or in metropolitan Cebu.
